Getting the groundwork right

Before construction begins, the site needs to be properly assessed and prepared. Ground conditions can vary considerably across Koh Samui, particularly between coastal areas, hillsides and previously developed land.

Correct excavation, drainage planning and foundation design provide the base for everything that follows.

Trying to save time or money during this stage can create considerably more expensive problems later.

Reinforcement and concrete

The quality of reinforcement and concrete work plays a major role in the long-term strength of a building.

Steel reinforcement must be correctly positioned, secured and inspected before concrete is poured. Concrete itself needs to be properly mixed, placed and allowed sufficient time to cure.

These aren't particularly glamorous parts of a villa build, but they are among the most important.

Planning for Samui's climate

Construction on Koh Samui also means planning for the island's tropical environment.

Heavy rain needs somewhere to go. Drainage should therefore be considered as part of the structure and landscaping from the beginning rather than added as an afterthought.

Good waterproofing, appropriate materials and careful detailing can also make a significant difference to the lifespan and maintenance requirements of a property.
